Overview

A new Ultrabook has quietly gone live within Dell’s world. The Dell Inspiron 14Z Ultrabook is showing in Dell stores across Australia and Asia and is a little bit confusing. It’s at the 21mm limit for 14” Ultrabooks and it weighs a relatively heavy, no, very heavy, 2.37KG. Base pricing is coming in at the equivalent of about 1000 US dollars depending on the country. The Dell Inspiron 14Z is built on Core i3, Core i5 or Core i7 configuration. 8GB of RAM and a 500GB drive long with the DVD drive hint at work-horse scenarios.

Acer Aspire S3, 13.3", 1350gm
The Acer S3 was always the honest, budget option in the market. Now updated with Windows 8 (from Oct 26th 2012) it still offers good value for money. CPU starts with Core i3 Sandy Bridge, the older generation, and other specs remain unchanged. [Oct 2012]

Inhon Blade 13 Carbon, 13.3", 870gm
Taiwanese company Inhon has introduced the Blade 13 Carbon Ultrabook with dimensions that make it the thinnest and lightest Ultrabook available, taking the throne from the NEC LaVie Z. Coming in at 1.9lbs (870g) and 10.7mm thin the Blade 13 Carbon beats the NEC by 5g and 2mm while still packing specs comparable to any current Ultrabook. Options include Core i5 or i7 CPU, 13″ 1080p screen, 128 or 256GB SSD and 4GB RAM. Pricing is quoted at $1,350 with a lower priced option with a 1600×900 screen and fiberglass body with still impressive dimensions of 2.6lbs (1,195g) and 12.6mm for about $1000.

Toshiba Kirabook, 13.3", 1206gm
The Toshiba Kirabook is a premium Ultrabook built on Intel's Ivy-Bridge platform. It's most compelling feature is that sweet 2560 x 1440 pixels display. With HDMI out and 3 USB 3.0 ports as well as an SDXC card reader it comes with some decend ports. It comes in three flavors: i5, i5-touchscreen, i7-touchscreen. With Bluetooth 4.0, Intel WiDi support and WiFi b/g/n it offers great performance. The only thing we're missing at that premium price is an ethernet option. The housing is made of aluminum alloy which makes it stiff and light at the same time.

Samsung NP350, 12.5", 1352gm
A very well rounded Ultrabook alternative. This hard-disk based laptop is available with Core i3 and Core i5 (mobile, not ultra-low voltage CPUs) and offers very similar battery life and performance figures to a standard ultrabook. The boot and program start times are slower than an Ultrabook though. Not available in all regions and pricing varies. In some areas the Core i3 version can be a real bargain.

Dell XPS 13, 13.3", 1400gm
Available as an updated Ivy Bridge build now the XPS 13 is a quality bit of kit. Unfortunately it only has a 720P HD screen rather than 1600x900 or FullHD so that might put some people off. We'd love to see an update of this with a 1600x900 touchscreen.

Tarox Modula Ultrabook, 14.1", 1500gm
The Tarox Modula Ultrabook is an Ivy-Bridge based Ultrabook which comes in various models. Basically there is a Core-i3 and a Core-i5 version with either 120GB or 250GB SSD. The Display comes at a rather average 1366x768 pixels at a 14" screen. We would have loved to see some more pixels in there, but arguably at that budget pricepoint we may overlook this here. To put all in a nutshell: a good middlerange ultrabook at a budget price!

Lenovo IdeaPad U410, 14.0", 1800gm
Targeted at the lower-cost Ultrabook segment the Lenovo Ideapad U410 offers the latest Intel 'Ivy Bridge' but also adds the Nvidia GeForce 610M for additional graphics capability. A relatively low-resolution screen my put some off but the pricing looks very competitive. Lenovo's quality could also win some customers for the U410 Ultrabook.

Toshiba Portege Z830, 13.3", 1120gm
The Toshiba Satellite/Portege Z830/Z835 is turning out to be one of the best specified 13" Ultrabooks so far. It has a leading 1.1KG weight, aluminium casing and a great range of ports and features. The features match its business-like looks. Wi-Di is included for those looking at wireless 1080p to TVs. The price is competitive. Watch out for: Noisy fan in quiet environments, slightly 'squishy' keyboard. Z835 is the US-only Core i3 model.
