Overview

The Lenovo U310 is breaking Ultrabook price barriers with its entry level model and although it's based on a 2011 CPU, is still worth looking at for home and student use. This is an Ultrabook that could be interesting for netbook users looking to upgrade too. Higher-end models are still price competitive and offer the latest Core i5 'Ivy Bridge' platforms with the HD4000, gaming-capable built-in graphics unit.

Acer Aspire S3, 13.3", 1350gm
The Acer S3 was always the honest, budget option in the market. Now updated with Windows 8 (from Oct 26th 2012) it still offers good value for money. CPU starts with Core i3 Sandy Bridge, the older generation, and other specs remain unchanged. [Oct 2012]

HP Envy 4, 14.0", 1750gm
The HP Envy 4t is available in Intel and AMD configurations and known as a 'sleekbook,' not an Ultrabook. There are discreet graphics GPU options and the CPU range includes both 2nd-gen and 3rd-gen CPU options. No SSD available at present [June 3rd 2012]

Lenovo IdeaPad U410, 14.0", 1800gm
Targeted at the lower-cost Ultrabook segment the Lenovo Ideapad U410 offers the latest Intel 'Ivy Bridge' but also adds the Nvidia GeForce 610M for additional graphics capability. A relatively low-resolution screen my put some off but the pricing looks very competitive. Lenovo's quality could also win some customers for the U410 Ultrabook.

Samsung NP350, 12.5", 1352gm
A very well rounded Ultrabook alternative. This hard-disk based laptop is available with Core i3 and Core i5 (mobile, not ultra-low voltage CPUs) and offers very similar battery life and performance figures to a standard ultrabook. The boot and program start times are slower than an Ultrabook though. Not available in all regions and pricing varies. In some areas the Core i3 version can be a real bargain.

Toshiba Portege Z830, 13.3", 1120gm
The Toshiba Satellite/Portege Z830/Z835 is turning out to be one of the best specified 13" Ultrabooks so far. It has a leading 1.1KG weight, aluminium casing and a great range of ports and features. The features match its business-like looks. Wi-Di is included for those looking at wireless 1080p to TVs. The price is competitive. Watch out for: Noisy fan in quiet environments, slightly 'squishy' keyboard. Z835 is the US-only Core i3 model.

ASUS UX31, 13.3", 1297gm
The UX31 (and smaller UX21) were the first true Ultrabooks to become available and ASUS have included a good set of specifications that include USB3, a high brightness 1600x900 screen and 128GB of fast SSD. We've reviewed the UX31 (and UX21) and it's an amazing bit of kit but you'll need to watch out for the keyboard which didn't work-out for us. Our review link is above.

Dell XPS 13, 13.3", 1400gm
Available as an updated Ivy Bridge build now the XPS 13 is a quality bit of kit. Unfortunately it only has a 720P HD screen rather than 1600x900 or FullHD so that might put some people off. We'd love to see an update of this with a 1600x900 touchscreen.

Fujitsu Lifebook UH572, 13.3", 1570gm
The Fujitsu Lifebook UH572 is an Ultrabook based on an Intel Ivy Bridge Core i5/7 processor clocked at 1.7/1.9GHz. It features up to 8GB of RAM and comes with various HDD/SSD options. The built-in stereo speakers are DTS licensed and should offer good audio quality. Having UMTS/HSUPA built in this Ultrabook can be good for working on the go.
