Overview

Although the 900X1A base version doesn't include the 'Turbo Boost' feature of the Core i5 versions, the platform performs well. Largely due to the fast SSD. For those comparing to the Asus UX21, you'll be interested in the backlit keyboard, matt screen, micro SD slot and competetive price. The base versions of the Core i5 and Core i3 versions only come with 2GB RAM and 64GB SSD but 4GB versions are available. [Dec 1 2011]

Alternatives to the Samsung 900X1B
Samsung NP350, 12.5", 1352gm
A very well rounded Ultrabook alternative. This hard-disk based laptop is available with Core i3 and Core i5 (mobile, not ultra-low voltage CPUs) and offers very similar battery life and performance figures to a standard ultrabook. The boot and program start times are slower than an Ultrabook though. Not available in all regions and pricing varies. In some areas the Core i3 version can be a real bargain.

First out of the block with the lightest and smallest of all the Ultrabooks is the UX21. A 45Wh battery may not bring worry-free battery life but USB3.0 and a generous 128GB SSD is included. Glossy screen may put some off but the styling and build quality seems excellent.

Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E130, 11.6", 1518gm
With the ThinkPad Edge 130, Lenovo released a decent piece of hardware for a reasonable price. It comes with different CPU options: Intel Pentium 977 being the lower end and Intel Core i3 being the higher end option. With 4GB of RAM and 320GB of Storage (HDD) it serves well enough for most purposes we encounter. One special thing we like is the upgradability that comes with this laptop. One can change storage, add RAM to the second memory bank or replace broken parts with ease. What's fascinating about this model is the 63Wh battery Lenovo chose to deliver as a standard power souce at that low price point.
